Model and actress Jessia Islam, the winner of Miss World Bangladesh, has spoken out regarding the abuse allegations made by model and actress Snigdha Chowdhury, urging the public to prioritise a fair investigation over scrutinising the victim’s account.
In a Facebook post shared on Tuesday (28 July), Jessia said the focus should remain on uncovering the truth and ensuring justice, rather than criticising how a survivor describes a traumatic experience.
She wrote that she did not wish to judge whether Snigdha mentioned details such as her car, residence, referring to herself as an “A-grade model”, or saying she resembled a Bollywood actress while recounting the alleged incident.
According to Jessia, someone who has experienced severe trauma may be emotionally distressed and unable to recount every detail in a perfectly structured manner.
Expecting a flawless narrative from a victim, she said, is neither fair nor realistic.
Jessia stressed that the priority should be a thorough investigation into the allegations and accountability for anyone found responsible.
She said those involved, regardless of their wealth, influence or social standing, should face legal consequences if the allegations are proven.
She also called for setting an example through the justice system so that no one feels empowered by money, power or status to treat a woman as property or an object.
Concluding her statement, Jessia urged people to stop focusing on minor inconsistencies in a victim’s account and instead support efforts to establish the facts and ensure justice is served.
