A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for killing Afroza Sultana in the capital’s Badda area in 2022.
Convict Md Hridoy Byapari, the victim’s driver, was also fined Tk10,000.
Judge Mohammad Moin Uddin Chowdhury of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court‑3 delivered the verdict on Wednesday.
Additional Public Prosecutor Md Zahirul Islam (Kaiyum) confirmed the information.
Case documents show that on 16 May 2022, Afroza, a working woman, was brutally murdered in her second‑floor flat of a multi‑storey building in Middle Badda. The next day, her brother Md Al Amin filed a murder case with Badda Police Station.
Investigators said Hridoy had lost a large sum of money in online gambling and became heavily indebted. To repay his debts and loot valuables, he planned and killed Afroza.
Police recovered the sharp weapon used in the murder along with 22.34 grams of looted gold ornaments.
Forensic evidence, including the post‑mortem report, DNA test results, and CID crime scene unit findings, confirmed Hridoy’s involvement.
Later, he gave a confessional statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
A total of 12 witnesses testified in the case. The trial concluded within just 30 working days after charges were framed.
