A man, who sustained critical injuries in an air conditioner explosion at a residential apartment in Dhaka’s Jatrabari, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Wednesday.
The victim, Tuhin Hossain, 38, was a resident of Digholpara village in Madaripur Sadar and son of Lokman Munshi. He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday afternoon at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident surgeon at the institute, said Tuhin had suffered burns on 47 per cent of his body and had been in critical condition since admission.
Three other members of his family his wife Eva Akhter, 30, and sons Tawhid, 7, and Tanvir, 9, are now undergoing treatment at the burn institute. Eva sustained 8 per cent burns, Tawhid 15 per cent, and Tanvir also suffered 47 per cent burns.
An air conditioner exploded on the seventh floor of a building near Lichubagan Mosque in the Dhalpur Bou Bazar area of Jatrabari at around 1.30am on 20 September, leaving four members of the family injured.
According to initial reports, the air conditioner exploded while the family was asleep, sparking a fire that rapidly engulfed the room.
Eva’s sister, Farzana Akhter, said all four family members were inside the apartment at the time. Tuhin worked at a mobile servicing shop in Dhaka’s Motaleb Plaza. Neighbours rushed to the scene, helped extinguish the fire, and took the victims to the burn institute that night.
