Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will observe Jatka Conservation Week 2026 from 7 to 13 April.
Fisheries Minister Aminur Rashid confirmed the information during a press conference held at the Secretariat on Monday. This year, the week will be observed under the theme, “If we stop catching Jatka, the sea and rivers will be full of Hilsa.”
The programme is set to be implemented simultaneously across 20 hilsa-rich districts in the country. Moreover, a ban on all types of fishing in the Bay of Bengal and its adjacent areas will be in effect from 15 April to 11 June.
Aminur said according to regulations, food assistance will be provided to fishers during this period. He added that the successful advancement of this initiative is possible with the cooperation of all stakeholders.
Responding to a query regarding reports that many fishers are unable to go to sea due to fuel costs, the Minister asserted that there is no oil crisis.
Regarding the possibility of sending hilsa to India this year, Aminur noted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will make the final decision. He clarified that hilsa is not technically exported from Bangladesh to India, stating, “What is sent, is sent as a gesture of courtesy.”
