Professor Dr Kozo Watanabe of Japan’s Ehime University met Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam at his office on Monday, 20 July 2026, to discuss implementing a JICA-funded project on controlling health risks caused by antimicrobial resistance in Dhaka through water quality monitoring and purification technology. Professor Dr Anwar Hossain of the Department of Fisheries at Dhaka University was present at the meeting.
The project, titled “Water Quality Monitoring and Purification Technology to Control Health Risks Caused by Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Dhaka Metropolitan Area”, will be implemented by Dhaka University with financial and technical support from JICA, the university said in a press release.
The two sides also discussed the possibility of establishing an international collaborative research laboratory and a satellite office at Dhaka University to strengthen joint research activities between Dhaka University and Ehime University.
Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam thanked Professor Dr Kozo Watanabe for visiting the university and showing interest in its education and research activities. He expressed interest in working with JICA and Japanese universities to further improve Dhaka University’s academic and research programmes, the press release said.
Later, Professor Dr Kozo Watanabe met Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Mohammad Almojaddedi Alfezani at his office.
