Engineer Selim Md Jane Alam has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD) of Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA).
The appointment was confirmed on Thursday through a notification issued by the Contract and Foreign Employment Branch of the Ministry of Public Administration.
According to the notification, signed by Md Golam Rabbani, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, the appointment was made under Section 28 (A) of the Ordinance No 10, 2024, which seeks to amend the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority Act, 1996.
Jane Alam has been appointed on a contractual basis for a period of one year from the date of joining.
The appointment is subject to the condition that he relinquishes all other professions, businesses, or working relationships with any government, semi-government, or private institutions and organisations.
Sources indicate that Engineer Selim Md. Jane Alam has extensive experience, having served in various responsible positions across national and international organisations.
He has previously led the Chattogram branch of the Association of Engineers (AB) and served as the Joint Convenor of the Chattogram Division of the Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad, a BNP-leaning professional body.
Notably, he played a leading role in street protests against the autocratic regime during the Awami League era.
The post of managing director at Chattogram WASA remained vacant for a significant period following the July Revolution. Although various government officials had been performing the duties, the absence of a permanent MD had led to a state of stagnation within the service provider.
Following the news of the appointment on Thursday afternoon, a sense of relief has reportedly returned among the officers and employees of WASA.
