A Union Parishad (UP) member was hacked to death in the early hours of Sunday in front of his house in Jigatala area of Islampur upazila in Jamalpur district.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahim Khandaker, 50, a two-time elected member of Ward 1 of Kulukandi Union Parishad. He also served as the Youth and Sports Affairs Secretary of the Kulukandi Union unit of the Awami League.
According to family members, a group of assailants, identifying themselves as members of a law enforcement agency, called Rahim out of his house around 2am. Once he stepped outside, the attackers indiscriminately hacked him to death in the courtyard. When family members tried to intervene, they were physically assaulted.
Police and local sources said Rahim was asleep with his family when the attackers arrived. After the brutal killing, the perpetrators fled the scene. Police later recovered the body.
Kulukandi Union Chairman Anisur Rahman confirmed Rahim’s death and said, “He was a good man and well-liked in the area. No one can say why he was murdered so mercilessly.” He demanded a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for the culprits.
Islampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge ASM Atikur Rahman said an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the killing and to identify those involved. The body is being prepared for autopsy at Jamalpur General Hospital, and legal procedures are in progress.
