BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has blamed Awami League for Jamaat-e-Islami’s current rise in Bangladesh politics.
The long-standing suppression of opposition voices by the Awami League while in power has paved the way for Jamaat’s resurgence, he said.
Fakhrul came up with the remarks while speaking at a post-election press conference in Thakurgaon on Friday morning.
When asked about Jamaat’s victory in 70 constituencies in the national election, he replied, “Whenever democracy is obstructed and its path blocked, extremist forces rise. That is what has happened with Jamaat. Whatever rise Jamaat has seen today is because of the Awami League. Their repressive rule, preventing the opposition from functioning, has led to this.”
He further said that the people of Bangladesh have rejected Jamaat and chosen BNP instead.
On the issue of a national government, Fakhrul said, “We always remain committed. We had said that we would contest the election together with those who joined the movement against fascism. We will form the government with them.”
Fakhrul added that the 31-point agenda will be implemented, and the commitments made in the July declaration will also remain on the priority list. He assured that these will be carried out gradually.
