Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Miah Golam Porwar has warned that his party will launch simultaneous movements in parliament and on the streets if state reforms are not implemented in accordance with the ‘July Charter’.
Addressing a Rokon conference organised by the district Jamaat at a community centre in Jhalakathi town on Saturday, Parwar claimed that the BNP is currently grappling with “hesitation and crisis” regarding the issue of reform. He further alleged that the BNP’s stance on state reform has become “unclear”.
The Jamaat leader accused the BNP of retreating from its previous commitments to reform, referendums, and state reconstruction as the prospect of power nears.
“If this situation continues, Jamaat will launch a rigorous movement both in parliament and on the streets,” he warned.
Porwar further asserted that the BNP is struggling to explain its position to the public and is seeking “political advantage” by bypassing the necessary reforms. He noted that the public’s aspirations following the July mass uprising specifically for an accountable state, a corruption-free administration, good governance, and justice have yet to be realised.
Expressing concern over the current security situation, the Porwar said that the rates of murder, rape, mugging, and road accidents have increased to “alarming” levels, leaving the public in a state of insecurity.
Regarding the upcoming local government elections, Porwar emphasised that they must be free, fair, and neutral to avoid further political instability. He warned that the government’s neutrality would be called into question if the people’s right to vote is not guaranteed.
