Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar on Saturday demanded an immediate end to post-election violence.
He warned the country could face another uprising if attacks, torture and looting of opposition activists’ businesses continue.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a meeting held at the party’s Khulna regional office on 21 February.
Parwar said alleged irregularities in election results and the subsequent violence have shattered people’s hopes.
He urged the Election Commission to investigate allegations of irregularities and nationwide attacks on activists without delay.
The meeting was chaired by Jamaat Executive Council Member and Khulna Region Director Principal Izzat Ullah, with central and regional leaders in attendance.
In his address, Parwar said the spirit of the Liberation War has not been fully realised and that his organisation is working to establish a Zakat-based welfare state free from interest, corruption and terrorism.
He also criticised former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, alleging that previous judicial processes were used to convict party leaders in what he described as staged cases.
The Jamaat secretary general called on activists to remain patient and act with composure.
He said there is no room for excessive celebration in victory or despair in defeat and that all actions must be dedicated to the satisfaction of Allah.
