Jamaat-e-Islami has raised concerns over the recent appointment of the governor of Bangladesh Bank, alleging that the selection was politically motivated and threatens the institution’s independence.

In a statement released on the party’s verified Facebook page on Thursday, Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said the appointment contradicts the expectations of the July mass uprising, which called for merit-based, efficient administration.

Golam Parwar claimed that, for the first time in Bangladesh’s history, an industrialist has been appointed to the central bank’s highest post. He also alleged that shortly before the appointment, nearly Tk89 crore (approximately $7 million) in loans for the appointee’s company were rescheduled under special policy provisions.

According to Jamaat, the new governor was previously an active member of the ruling party’s election steering committee.

Golam Parwar warned that such politically influenced appointments could undermine public and international confidence in the central bank.

He further questioned how someone who has faced challenges managing a medium-sized enterprise could be expected to maintain the country’s overall financial stability and manage monetary policy effectively.

Golam Parwar added that the July quota movement was not only a demand for quota reform but also a call for qualitative changes in state institutions.

He expressed concern that ignoring merit in this appointment could signal the erosion of Bangladesh Bank’s independence.
