Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has cautioned the Election Commission (EC) against issuing sudden circulars or directives that could cause public anxiety and uncertainty.
The party stressed that the EC must avoid creating situations that require repeated formal complaints from political parties.
Speaking to journalists on Monday after a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner at the Election Bhaban in Agargaon, Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, stated that the party aims to prevent any actions by the EC that could lead to national confusion.
Concerns over mobile phone usage
Jamaat expressed significant concern over the EC’s previous decision to ban mobile phone possession within 400 yards of polling stations. While the EC informed the delegation that the decision had been withdrawn, Zubayer noted that certain restrictions would still apply.
He emphasised the need for clear and specific guidelines regarding mobile phone use inside polling stations to ensure that presiding officials do not provide conflicting interpretations, which could mislead the public.
Conduct of law enforcement and officials
Jamaat-e-Islami lodged formal complaints against several high-ranking law enforcement officials, including the DIG of Khulna and the SPs of Natore and Shariatpur. Jubayer asserted that the conduct of these officials was “not conducive to a fair election” and urged the EC to provide proper directives, or, if necessary, remove them from their posts to maintain a neutral environment.
The party also raised concerns about a recent order by the Returning Officer of Natore banning all processions in the area.
Zubayer questioned the legality and necessity of this order, stating that it had caused “public discomfort” and confusion about whether such local decisions override national standards.
Auxiliary forces and election significance
Regarding the deployment of the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), Jamaat pointed out that the BNCC typically serves as an auxiliary force during elections. While the EC referred to specific rules within the Representation of the People Order (RPO) and has yet to make a final decision, Jamaat called for maximum support from auxiliary forces to ensure a smooth and peaceful election process.
Zubayerr emphasised that the upcoming elections, which will include both the national parliamentary election and a referendum, are especially significant, with heightened public interest. He underscored the importance of maintaining a peaceful and orderly environment to facilitate a free and fair election.
In conclusion, the party reiterated that the EC must take necessary steps to avoid controversial decisions that could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
