Jamaat-e-Islami will hold an emergency meeting of its top policymaking body on Saturday in the wake of recent developments related to seat-sharing negotiations, particularly following a press conference by Islami Andolan Bangladesh.
The meeting of Jamaat’s executive council members and leaders responsible for seat-sharing will be held at the party’s central office in Mogbazar at 10am.
A meeting of the 10-party Jamaat-led alliance’s liaison committee is also scheduled later in the day.
On Thursday night, Jamaat and nine other parties, including the NCP, announced a seat-sharing agreement for 253 parliamentary constituencies, noting that discussions with Islami Andolan Bangladesh were still ongoing.
However, Islami Andolan Bangladesh on Friday accused Jamaat of non-cooperation and declared that it would contest the election independently in 268 constituencies. The party also said it would support candidates of like-minded parties, excluding the BNP and Jatiya Party, in the remaining 32 seats.
Sources said leaders of the 10-party alliance may also hold talks today with senior leaders of Islami Andolan Bangladesh in an effort to keep the party within a proposed 11-party alliance. Negotiations are expected to continue until the final day for withdrawal of nominations.
If the talks fail, the 10-party alliance is likely to nominate candidates for the remaining 47 seats based on a revised seat-sharing arrangement, the sources added.
