Opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to participate in the upcoming presidential election.
A final decision on whether the party will field its own candidate or a unified candidate from the 11-party alliance is expected to be reached during a high-level meeting of the alliance this Sunday.
The decision to contest the election was reached during a meeting of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council held on Saturday evening at the party’s central office in Moghbazar. The session was presided over by the Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman.
According to a press release from Jamaat’s central publicity department issued on Saturday night, the meeting was attended by Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar and other members of the Central Executive Council. Following detailed deliberations, the council reached a unanimous decision for Jamaat-e-Islami to take part in the polls.
The 11-party alliance’s top-level meeting has been convened for Sunday to declare the opposition’s candidate.
This move is seen as a clarification of the opposition bloc’s political activities regarding the presidential race. Should the alliance decide to field a single candidate, it will formally establish the coalition’s position in the election.
Beyond the presidential race, the Saturday meeting included discussions on the country’s overall political landscape. Leaders also reviewed constitutional reforms, the alliance’s ongoing political programmes, and future strategies.
Sources indicated that Sunday’s meeting may further address the alliance’s political trajectory and future tactical moves alongside finalising the presidential candidate.
