Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday urged the government and relevant authorities to take immediate and effective measures to resolve the ongoing gas crisis and ease public suffering.
In a statement, the party’s Assistant Secretary General Advocate Zubair said people across the country were facing acute shortages of LPG and CNG, disrupting household cooking, transport services and industrial production.
He expressed deep concern over the crisis, saying long queues of vehicles had formed at CNG filling stations in the capital because of the severe shortage.
“As a result, millions of working hours are being lost and public suffering has reached its peak. People believe illegal gas connections, government mismanagement, irregularities and syndicates are largely responsible for the crisis,” he said.
Zubair demanded an investigation into whether any group was deliberately creating an artificial shortage to raise gas prices.
He also urged the authorities to take effective steps to reduce public suffering, explore and drill new gas wells, ensure extraction from existing fields and import the required volume of LNG in line with demand.
He alleged that the government was prioritising the interests of unscrupulous groups instead of addressing people’s basic needs, leading to a severe gas crisis across the country.
