Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and leader of the opposition, has called for the comprehensive implementation of the July Charter package rather than partial execution.
Addressing a press conference at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Building on Wednesday, Shafiqur stated that the party expects the full realisation of the July proposals and the entitlements due to the opposition.
In light of this, he noted that the party is not currently considering accepting the post of Deputy Speaker.
He affirmed Jamaat’s commitment to acting as a responsible opposition, stating they would provide counsel to the government when errors occur, protest alongside the public if necessary, and seek judicial intervention in specific instances.
Shafiqur urged the ruling party to honour the spirit of July by swearing in the Constitution Reform Council.
He cautioned that without such measures, the legitimacy of the election would be called into question, pointing out that there was no provision for a vote in 2026 under the existing constitution.
Regarding the party’s stance on the President’s speech in parliament, he remarked that the nation would witness their position at the appropriate time, stating, “When the sun rises, its reflection is seen.”
He further expressed expectations that the speaker would act with justice (insaf) and afford the opposition “sufficient opportunity” during the upcoming parliamentary session.
The press conference followed a meeting of the opposition parliamentary party, presided over by Shafiqur, where decisions were made regarding the first session scheduled for Thursday.
