Literary and Cultural Secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), Musaddiq Ali Ibn Mohammad, has issued a stern warning to a Jamaat-e-Islami leader following “controversial and insulting” comments regarding the student body.
In an open letter, Musaddiq expressed his condemnation of the remarks and issued an ultimatum demanding a public apology to the nation. He stated that if the leader fails to apologise publicly by Sunday, a defamation case will be filed against him at Shahbagh Police Station on Monday.
The legal threat involves Shamim Ahsan, a Jamaat leader from Barguna, who allegedly described Ducsu as a “den of drugs and prostitutes.”
The open letter characterised this statement as “hateful” and “completely unacceptable,” noting that such comments are profoundly insulting to the dignity of Dhaka University.
Addressing the context of the remarks, the letter clarified that the Ducsu social service secretary had previously identified several drug and prostitution syndicates operating in and around the university area.
It was emphasised, however, that these individuals were outsiders with no affiliation to Dhaka University, and they were caught red-handed and handed over to the Ramna Zone police in accordance with the law.
The letter further asserted that the Jamaat leader’s sweeping generalisation of the university as a “den of drug and prostitutes” site is a gross misrepresentation. “He must immediately apologise publicly to the nation,” the letter added, reiterating the Monday deadline for legal action.
