Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has invited BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman to participate in a live public discussion to present their respective political agendas and election manifestos before the nation.
The proposal was made in a post published on Shafiqur Rahman’s verified Facebook page on Friday night, where he emphasised that political legitimacy in Bangladesh can only be achieved through a transparent and credible electoral process.
In the post, shared at around 8pm, the Jamaat leader said no election outcome could gain public acceptance without fairness, trust, and openness.
He described the proposed discussion as a step toward greater accountability and transparency in national politics.
“Legitimacy comes only from a free and fair election. Without trust and fairness, no result can earn the people’s confidence,” he wrote.
Referring to the political landscape following the July uprising, Shafiqur Rahman said political leaders have a responsibility to demonstrate a more constructive and respectful political culture, particularly for the younger generation.
“After the July revolution, we owe our youth a new standard of politics-one that is civil, tolerant and non-confrontational,” he said.
He proposed that both leaders appear jointly before the public and the media in a live forum, allowing open scrutiny and debate, and enabling citizens to independently assess their political visions.
Mentioning Tarique Rahman’s recently announced political roadmap, the Jamaat chief invited him to share a public platform where both parties would outline their election commitments and engage in direct discussion.
“Let us begin a new chapter for Bangladesh, where we all commit to respecting the will of the people,” Shafiqur added.
As of Saturday morning, the BNP had not issued any public response to the proposal.
