Director Paul Thomas Anderson addressed questions about the racial politics and socio-political themes in his Oscar-winning film, ‘One Battle After Another’, at the 98th Academy Awards’ Oscars Backstage.

When asked about the movie’s message to society, Anderson acknowledged the parallels between the film and current events. “Our film obviously reflects what’s happening in the world,” he said, referring to the story’s anarchist group, led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Tenaya Taylor, which frees prisoners from a military-controlled encampment reminiscent of ICE facilities.

Anderson also responded to critiques regarding the portrayal of Black women and racial dynamics in the film. “It’s complicated,” he said. “Teyana Taylor’s character is flawed. She makes decisions that are detrimental to the revolution she is trying to fight. We always knew we were making something complex. This woman suffers not only from postpartum depression but also from unresolved personal issues.”

He added that the narrative explores the generational consequences of damaged parents and how the next generation, represented by Willa and Chase Infiniti’s character, navigates the legacies they inherit. “The point is to show the evolution of the next generation,” Anderson said.

One Battle After Another reportedly cost $140 million to produce and promote, making it Anderson’s highest-grossing film to date with nearly $210 million at the global box office.

Warner Bros secured the film in an auction over Sony, aiming to establish it as an original classic in the studio’s library for future generations.
