Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has formally submitted his resignation to the Office of Supreme Leader, citing a systematic exclusion of the presidency from essential state decision-making.
In an official letter sent on Sunday, Pezeshkian stated that the government has been effectively marginalised from vital processes, creating a vacuum that has allowed hardline factions within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to seize control of national affairs, reports Iran International.
The Iranian president reportedly informed the Office of Supreme Leader that, under these conditions, he is unable to manage the administration or carry out his legal responsibilities. Consequently, he has requested to step down from his position with immediate effect.
This development signals an unprecedented and deep division within the highest levels of the Iranian leadership. It follows a period of prolonged tension between the executive branch and the Islamic Republic’s military-security institutions.
Previous reports have indicated that the IRGC has been gradually stripping the presidency of its powers, taking over key sectors of the government.
According to informed sources, this shift has left the Pezeshkian administration trapped in a political and executive deadlock. This impasse has halted diplomatic negotiations and prevented the implementation of desired reforms to the cabinet structure.
While the resignation highlights a significant rift at the core of the state, it is currently unclear whether Mojtaba Khamenei will accept the president’s request to step down.
