While smart-ball technology may seem revolutionary, it is the latest step in a long journey. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, FIFA introduced connected-ball technology through Adidas’ Al Rihla match ball.
Combined with semi-automated offside technology, the system helped officials make faster and more accurate decisions. The success of that experiment paved the way for the more advanced version being deployed in 2026.
Perhaps the most striking innovation at the upcoming tournament is FIFA’s plan to create digital avatars of all 1,248 participating players. Before the competition begins, every player will undergo a rapid body scan that produces a highly detailed three-dimensional model.
These avatars will help referees and video officials analyse incidents more effectively, particularly when players are moving at high speed or are partially obscured by others.
The technology will work alongside FIFA’s semi-automated offside system, which uses stadium cameras to track players and the ball dozens of times every second.

The use of advanced tracking technology at the World Cup has evolved steadily over the past two decades.
During the 2006 World Cup in Germany, teams increasingly relied on video analysis and performance data, although such tools remained largely behind the scenes. By 2014 in Brazil, goal-line technology had become a major milestone, ensuring that referees could instantly determine whether the ball had crossed the line.
Four years later in Russia, VAR transformed football’s biggest tournament. Referees gained access to video reviews for goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity.
Although the system initially divided opinion, it significantly reduced major officiating errors and has since become a permanent feature of elite football.
The 2026 World Cup will also introduce “Referee View”, an AI-assisted camera system designed to provide spectators with a perspective similar to that of the officials on the pitch.
The technology stabilises footage captured from the referee’s viewpoint, allowing fans in stadiums and at home to experience key moments from the centre of the action.
Beyond refereeing and broadcasting, FIFA is turning to artificial intelligence to support coaches and analysts. One of its most ambitious projects is Football AI Pro, a digital assistant that will be made available to all participating teams.
The platform will analyse matches and training sessions, generating tactical insights, performance reports and strategic recommendations. Rather than forcing coaching staff to sift through enormous amounts of raw data, the system will transform information into practical suggestions that can be used before, during and after matches.
Football AI Pro can also produce written summaries, video breakdowns and graphical presentations of match events. FIFA believes the technology will help level the playing field by giving every nation access to sophisticated analytical tools that were once available only to the wealthiest football federations.
This focus on democratising data reflects a broader trend in modern football. Elite clubs and national teams increasingly rely on analytics departments, machine learning models and tracking systems to gain competitive advantages. FIFA’s latest initiatives aim to make these resources accessible across the global game.
As the World Cup enters a new era, technology is becoming as much a part of the tournament as packed stadiums and unforgettable goals.
