Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has emphasised the need for transparent and impartial distribution of family cards, ensuring government aid reaches the rightful beneficiaries.

Speaking at a district-level officials’ meeting at the Barishal Circuit House on Friday morning, the minister said teams would be formed in each union under the leadership of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), in coordination with the union chairman and two social workers.

These teams will verify the eligibility of beneficiaries and distribute family cards free from political influence or nepotism.

Highlighting the importance of accurate data, Minister Swapan said, “The level of civilization and institutional strength of a state depends on the accuracy of its statistics. Proper data collection, preservation, and rapid reporting are essential for informed decision-making. A modern database system is crucial; without it, correct decisions cannot be taken.”

The minister also stressed the urgent need to modernise healthcare in Barishal.

“Despite being the capital of South Bengal, Barishal lacks advanced medical facilities. Transporting critically ill patients to Dhaka is both challenging and costly. Transforming Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital into a modern, fully equipped facility is now essential. Establishing a specialised trauma centre in Barishal has also become an urgent need,” he said.

The meeting was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Md Khairul Alam Sumon, with Superintendent of Police Farzana Islam attending as a special guest.

Officials from various government departments and members of the media were also present.
