Brahmanbaria Railway Police have seized a large consignment of various branded Indian sarees, valued at around Tk54 lakh, during a raid on the Karnaphuli Express.
Brahmanbaria Railway Police Outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter in a press release issued on Monday morning. The seizure was carried out on Sunday afternoon at Ashuganj.
According to police sources, acting on a tip-off, a team from the Brahmanbaria Railway Police conducted a raid on the Dhaka-bound Karnaphuli Express at Ashuganj Railway Station.
During the operation, police recovered 18 sacks of illegally smuggled Indian sarees from the train’s luggage van. However, no arrests were made as the smugglers could not be located at the time.
The seized goods were later unloaded at Bhairab station with the assistance of the Bhairab Railway Police. The haul included 1,080 pieces of various brands, including Indian Prime Silk and Katan, with an estimated market value of around Tk54 lakh.
SI Rafiqul said, “Smuggling is likely to increase ahead of the upcoming Eid. However, the Railway Police’s operations to prevent smuggling will continue.”
