India’s Assistant High Commissioner Rajeev Ranjan visited the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) in Agrabad on Sunday, with both sides discussing deeper cooperation in developing Bangladesh’s capital market, including commodity derivatives.
CSE Chairman AKM Habibur Rahman hosted the meeting. Board Directors Major (Rtd) Emdadul Islam, Shahjada Mahmud Chowdhury and Naznin Sultana, and CSE Managing Director M Shaifur Rahman Mazumdar were present along with senior officials, the port city bourse said in a press release.
CSE Managing Director M Shaifur Rahman Mazumdar presented a strategic plan to expand and diversify the capital market and sought collaboration with India, particularly to develop a commodity derivatives market.
He called for sharing India’s experience, expanding asset classes and positioning CSE as a multi-asset exchange. He also invited Indian brokers and investors to explore opportunities in Bangladesh.
Assistant High Commissioner Rajeev Ranjan said India was willing to share its capital market experience through joint technical sessions, specialised workshops and knowledge transfer programmes.
He said Bangladesh could benefit from India’s expertise in commodity derivatives, which are important for price discovery and risk management.
He referred to the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) as a global leader and said its model could guide CSE with support from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
India viewed Bangladesh as a development partner and was committed to supporting its financial market ambitions, he added.
CSE Chairman AKM Habibur Rahman thanked the envoy and expressed hope for stronger bilateral cooperation in developing Bangladesh’s capital market.
The meeting ended with both sides reaffirming their commitment to building a sustainable capital market, followed by a luncheon.
