Independent candidate and former state minister Md Rezaul Karim announced his withdrawal from the 13th National Parliamentary Election in the Narayanganj-3 (Sonargaon) constituency on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists at the Meghna Industrial Area in Sonargaon around 3pm, Rezaul Karim alleged irregularities at several polling centres and demanded a fresh election in the constituency.

He said his polling agents were removed from voting centres and claimed that fake voting was taking place at some centres.

He added that under the current circumstances, a free and fair election was not possible.

“No fair election is possible in the present situation,” he said, announcing his decision to boycott the poll and calling for re-polling.

No immediate response was available from the returning officer concerned.
