Police arrested an imam on Friday following a case filed over the alleged sexual harassment of a child in the Chakoi Bazar area of Narail.
Narail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ajay Kumar Kundu confirmed the matter. The arrested individual has been identified as Aminul Islam, 57. He served as the imam of a mosque.
According to the case statement, Aminul lived at the mosque and taught Arabic to local children on the mosque’s veranda every morning after the Fajr prayer. The victim and two other girls were his students.
The incident occurred on 5 May, when Aminul allegedly lured the victim into his room with the promise of chocolates and touched her inappropriately. After she returned home and informed her family, they questioned other children, who revealed that they had also been subjected to similar treatment. Then her father filed a case at the police station.
When a group of locals gathered to confront Aminul about the allegations, he attempted to flee. However, they caught him, beat him, and handed him over to the police.
OC Ajay said, “Aminul admitted to the sexual harassment during initial interrogation.”
