Bangladesh earned a bronze medal in weightlifting at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 8 November.
Marzia Akter Ikra claimed third place in the 53kg weight category, lifting a total of 163kg-72kg in the snatch and 92kg in the clean and jerk.
Eight competitors took part in the event. Turkey’s Kansel won gold with 188kg, while Indonesia’s Baslila secured silver with 174kg. Azerbaijan’s Seijan finished fourth, four kilograms behind Ikra.
Bangladesh’s previous medals at the Islamic Games came in archery during the Konya edition. With archery and shooting absent from this year’s competition, expectations for medals were modest, making Ikra’s bronze in weightlifting a welcome surprise.
Elsewhere, Brishti finished fifth in the 48kg category and Ashiqur Rahman Taj came sixth in the 60kg event. Two-time South Asian Games gold medallist Mabia Akter Shimanta will compete on 9 November.
