England cricket legend Ian Botham has strongly criticized the team’s “Bazball” style of play. He warned England faces a 5-0 Ashes series loss if they do not change their strategy.
Australia easily beat England in the Perth Test match. Travis Head played a spectacular innings. Australia won the match by eight wickets. The Test finished in just two days.
This heavy defeat brought more scrutiny on England’s attacking “Bazball” method. Former players like Michael Vaughan and R Ashwin had already called the approach too risky.
Ian Botham, also known as Lord Botham, is the latest to criticize the team. He called their performance “horrendous.” Botham said England must quickly adapt and stop using the Bazball approach.
“It was horrendous. There is no other word for it,” Botham told PA News Agency.
“England must fire up and fire up fast. I am sick of hearing, ‘This is the way we play.’ If I hear that again, I might throw something at the TV,” added Botham.
The England legend did not hold back. He warned Captain Ben Stokes and his team about the series result.
“If that is the way you play, you might as well go home now,” Botham said. “It is going to be 5-0.”
“They need to understand the situation. I want to see more pride when players wear that England sweater.”
Botham also challenged senior players Joe Root and Ben Stokes. He said their legacy will suffer if they do not perform well in Australia.
“People remember what you achieve here,” Botham stated.
“Joe and Ben are two world-class players. Joe has 39 centuries. But they are desperate to make a mark here. You can only do that by winning.”
Neither Joe Root nor Ben Stokes has ever won a Test match in Australia. Botham said winning in Australia brings great respect.
“Winning here feels very good,” he said. “Every time you beat Australia is a great day. This should motivate the England team.”
