Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian has stated that individuals can only be regarded as truly superior when they uphold humanity and compassion.

Speaking as the chief guest at a scientific seminar on Sunday, the Deputy Commissioner remarked that while humans are often described as Ashraful Makhluqat (the noblest of creation), true greatness is found only when humanity works within a person.

“Without compassion and empathy, no one can claim to be superior,” he said.

The seminar was organised by the Chattogram Heart Foundation and the Bangladesh Hypertension and Heart Failure Foundation to observe World Hypertension Day.

Highlighting the vital link between social responsibility and public health, Mian emphasised that a healthy society cannot be constructed without healthy people and a sense of humanity.

He drew attention to the struggles of those undergoing dialysis, noting that their constant worry for survival often forces their dreams to become secondary.

He urged the public to stand beside those suffering from serious illnesses and stressed that a responsible society could significantly reduce health risks through awareness and healthy lifestyles.

“If we can establish a responsible society, perhaps we can reduce diseases, including kidney and heart-related illnesses. Society cannot move forward if we think only about ourselves,” he added.

Mohammad Abdus Salam, President of the Chattogram Heart Foundation, who presided over the event, called for the establishment of a specialised hospital for heart and kidney patients in Chattogram.

He further warned that increasing mental stress and unhealthy lifestyles are contributing to heightened health risks.

The keynote speaker, Prof Dr Probir Kumar Das, identified high blood pressure as a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney complications. He stressed the importance of regular exercise, healthy diets, and timely medical treatment to mitigate these risks.
