A woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband in Narail’s Lohagara upazila following a dispute linked to her TikTok activity, police said on Tuesday. The accused has since been arrested.
The deceased was identified as Sumona Ferdousi, 38. Her husband, Limon Mallik, 27, was arrested from the Dighalia area of the upazila on Monday night.
Police said Limon later confessed to the killing during preliminary interrogation.
According to Lohagara Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy, Sumona, originally from Narayanganj, was Limon’s second wife. Limon is the son of Idris Mallik of Char Dighalia village in Lohagara.
During questioning, Limon told police that his wife frequently posted videos on TikTok in his absence and had allegedly developed relationships with unknown individuals through social media, including exchanging what he described as objectionable photos and videos.
Police said the couple often quarrelled over the issue despite repeated assurances from Sumona that she would stop such activities.
The latest altercation reportedly broke out around 8am on Monday over a TikTok video. At one stage, Limon allegedly assaulted his wife, leaving her injured and unconscious on the floor.
He then strangled her to death and later hanged the body from a ceiling beam in an attempt to stage the death as suicide, police said.
After the incident, Limon reportedly went to work around 10am as usual and returned home at about 5pm. Upon opening the door, he began shouting and crying, which drew the attention of neighbours.
He was later taken into police custody for questioning that night.
“The body was hanged to create the impression of suicide and conceal the murder,” said Inspector Ajit Kumar Roy. “We have informed the victim’s family, and legal procedures are underway.”
