Police recovered the body of a woman from a flat in the Ukilpara area of Bhola on Thursday.
Bhola Sadar Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Ziauddin confirmed the matter. The woman has been identified as Mitu Akter, 25.
According to family sources, Mitu married Sohag around five years ago. They have a two-year-old daughter. Since their marriage, Sohag tortured Mitu over dowry demands. Despite Mitu’s family providing cash, a television, a refrigerator, and various household furniture at different times, the torture did not cease.
Multiple arbitration meetings were held between the two families regarding the ongoing abuse. At one point, the matter was even taken to the police. Although the police mediated the issue on several occasions, Sohag’s torture of Mitu continued.
On Thursday morning, Sohag called his mother-in-law and informed her that Mitu was critically ill and that she needed to arrive quickly. Upon receiving the call, Mitu’s parents and relatives rushed to the residence, only to find her lifeless body lying on the bed.
By then, Sohag and other members of his family had fled the house.
Inspector Ziauddin said police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to the Bhola Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Legal proceedings are underway.
