The education sector will receive the highest allocation of Tk 1.23 lakh crore in the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year budget, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon announced on Thursday.
The minister disclosed this after a meeting with the prime minister at the Secretariat.
The Ministry of Education had sought an allocation of 3.5 per cent of GDP in this year’s budget. In response, the prime minister has assured an allocation of 2 percent, which is 0.31 percent higher than the previous fiscal year, the minister said.
He also spoke of plans to gradually increase the education sector allocation to 5 per cent of GDP.
Noting that payments to the Private Teachers’ Welfare Trust and retirement benefits have been suspended, the minister alleged that several thousand crore taka had been embezzled from this source.
He added that within the next month, a lump sum allocation would be made to restart the Teachers’ Welfare Trust and retirement allowance payments.
