Employees of hotels and restaurants have warned they will go on strike on 14 January if the government-declared minimum wage is not enforced by 13 January.
Akteruzzaman Khan, convener of the Minimum Wage and Labour Law Implementation Sangram Parishad, announced the strike at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on Monday.
On 5 May, the government announced a minimum wage of Tk13,050 for hotel and restaurant workers. Despite the gazette notification, most hotels and restaurants across the country have yet to implement it, they said.
The workers also demanded immediate enforcement of the government-declared minimum wage, issuance of appointment letters and identity cards, ensuring an eight-hour working day, fair payment for overtime, and proper implementation of weekly holidays and other legal benefits guaranteed under labour laws.
As part of their central programme, the workers held demonstrations on Sunday demanding full enforcement of labour laws in the sector.
Protest marches and rallies were held in various parts of Dhaka and other areas of the country.
