A high-voltage power cable running through a room inside a building in Savar is putting six families at significant risk of a major accident.
Located in the Hemayetpur Dhorindhara area of Savar, the building is home to two power cables carrying 6,350 volts of electricity. These cables pass through the second-floor staircase and a room in a four-story building owned by Babul Mia.
The building was constructed nearly four years ago by Hossain Ali, who failed to follow building regulations, leading to the power lines being installed inside the structure.
Currently, six families reside in the building, despite the hazards. The present owner, Babul Mia’s son Roman, told TIMES of Bangladesh via phone, “We purchased the building seven months ago. Around 20 days ago, we submitted a request to the Rural Electricity Office to remove the power cables. The removal is scheduled for this month.”
Golam Kausar Talukder, General Manager of Dhaka Rural Electric Supply Cooperative-3, confirmed, “The electricity supply to the line has been cut off, and power is being supplied through a bypass. The owner has paid for the removal, and the power lines will be relocated soon.”
