The High Court has granted bail to television actor Zaher Alvi in a case involving the provocation of his wife’s suicide.
On Sunday, the High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher delivered the order, declaring the previously issued rule on his bail absolute. Joynul Abedin conducted the hearing on behalf of the bail petition.
Upon being produced in court after the remand period, the court ordered Alvi, also known as Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, to be sent back to jail on Thursday.
According to the case proceedings, Alvi’s wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Mirpur DOHS area of the capital on 28 February. She was subsequently taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where the attending physician declared her dead.
The day after the incident, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case at Pallabi Police Station. The primary allegation in the case is that Ikra was forced to commit suicide due to long-term family disputes and various forms of mental torture.
Earlier, on 18 June Zaher Alvi surrendered through his lawyer and applied for bail in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin. Following the hearing, the court rejected his application and ordered him to be sent to prison.
On 21 June the investigating officer of the case applied for a seven-day remand for a proper investigation. On 24 June Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al-Biruni Meer granted a two-day remand after a hearing.
