Continuous heavy rainfall and torrential water flow from upstream have submerged the low-lying areas of Jhenaigati upazila in Sherpur, leaving local residents in a state of immense suffering.
From Saturday morning, the water level of the Maharshi River began to overflow, inundating Jhenaigati Sadar Bazar and surrounding localities. Floodwaters have entered shops, residential houses, and covered major roads, severely disrupting normal business activities and daily life.
Local inhabitants have expressed their grievances, stating that the absence of a town protection embankment causes the Sadar Bazar and adjacent areas to flood every monsoon season, even with a slight rise in water levels.
This year, the situation has repeated, with floodwater entering business establishments and disrupting commercial activities.
Affected businessmen reported that they are struggling to protect goods as water continues to enter their premises, while movement in the area has also been severely affected.
Meanwhile, in Nalitabari upazila, the Chellakhali River at the Batkuchi point is flowing 2cm above the danger level, raising fears of a further deterioration in the flood situation for riverbank residents.
Sudipta Chowdhury, the Executive Engineer of the District Water Development Board, confirmed the rainfall records- 24.50 mm at the Sherpur point, 35 mm in Nalitabari, and a significant 180 mm at the Nakugaon point.
Addressing the situation, Mahmudul Huq Rubel, the Member of Parliament for the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi-Jhenaigati) constituency, stated that the issue of constructing a permanent embankment on the Maharshi River has already been raised in the National Parliament.
He expressed optimism that a sustainable embankment would be constructed soon, which he believes will significantly alleviate the perennial suffering of the local people
