High Court has summoned Ayub Hossain, registrar of Islamic Arabic University (IAU), over the non-compliance of a court directive concerning the salary and allowances of the university’s deputy registrar, Md Abu Hanifa.
He has been ordered to appear in person before the court on 3 February.
The directive was issued by a High Court bench led by Justice Fahmida Kader while hearing a contempt petition.
Lawyer Mohammad Belayet Hossain represented the petitioner and confirmed the order to the media on Tuesday.
According to the case details, the university’s vice-chancellor and registrar failed to implement the High Court’s specific order to distribute Abu Hanifa’s salary and allowances, despite repeated instructions.
The deputy registrar had previously faced controversy during the Awami League government when a report labelled him a BNP and Jamaat-Shibir cadre, leading the university to cancel his permanent appointment on 31 December 2023.
Abu Hanifa approached the High Court, which on 2 April 2024 declared the cancellation order illegal and reinstated him with full duties on 7 August last year. Despite the court’s instructions to pay his salary, the university withheld it through various means.
Lawyer Belayet Hossain said the contempt petition was filed against the vice-chancellor and registrar for ignoring the court order.
The High Court issued a rule on 20 July last year, and in a recent hearing on 22 January, directed the registrar to appear before the court at 11am on 3 February.
