The High Court has directed the Gaibandha Civil Surgeon to conduct a formal investigation and submit a report regarding the deaths of several individuals following a series of dog attacks in Sundarganj.
A bench comprising Justice Md Iqbal Kabir and Justice SM Saiful Islam issued the order on Wednesday after hearing a writ petition filed in connection with the incident.
The petition was submitted by Advocate Md Shafinur Islam, seeking government-funded medical treatment for the injured and compensation for the families of those who died.
According to reports presented in the petition, 17 people were injured in the dog bite incidents, and five later died.
The writ named 11 respondents, including the Health Secretary, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner, and Superintendent of Police.
Representing the petitioner, lawyer Shamim Haider Patwary told the media that victims were unable to access anti-rabies vaccines at government hospitals and were forced to obtain them from private facilities. Despite receiving treatment, five individuals subsequently died.
The High Court has directed the civil surgeon to submit a comprehensive report after the Eid-ul-Adha holidays.
The probe must determine the exact number of casualties, establish the causes of death, and assess whether any negligence or lapses in treatment occurred.
