The High Court on Wednesday directed the Election Commission (EC) to register the Bangladesh Peoples League as a political party within three months.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Syed Mohammad Tajrul Hossain passed the order after disposing of a rule issued earlier over the matter.
Advocate Garib Newaz Mohammad, chairman of the Bangladesh Peoples League, appeared for the party during the hearing, while Advocate Md Selim Mia represented the Election Commission.
The legal dispute began after Syed Mahbub Hossain, secretary general of the party, filed a writ petition challenging the EC’s decision not to register the organisation.
According to the petition, the Bangladesh Peoples League was formed in 1976 and applied for registration with the EC in 2025.
However, the commission decided against granting registration on 2 February, prompting the party to move the High Court. The court later issued a rule seeking an explanation over the EC decision.
After the final hearing on Wednesday, the court disposed of the rule and directed the EC to complete the registration process within the next three months.
