Hasnat Abdullah has appeared before the International Crimes Tribunal to testify in the murder case of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR).
Hasnat, chief organiser for the southern region of National Citizen Party (NCP) and a former leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, went to the tribunal around 10:30am on Tuesday.
Hasnat is scheduled to testify as the 22nd witness before ICT-2, led by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, on Tuesday.
The accused in the case include former BRUR vice-chancellor Hasibur Rashid and 29 others. Among those arrested and currently in prison are former ASI Amir Hossain, former BRUR proctor Shariful Islam, former constable Sujon Chandra Roy, Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury, Rafiul Hasan Russell, and Anwar Parvez.
On 27 November, cross examination of the 21st witness concluded after 18 consecutive days of hearings. The tribunal then fixed the date for further proceedings.
Abu Sayed’s death during the July uprising last year marked a turning point in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. A video of the incident, showing the student being shot during the movement in Rangpur on 16 July 2024, went viral on social media.
The footage showed Abu Sayed standing on the road with his arms outstretched while police aimed and fired at him.
