International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has said it is still unclear what status deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, convicted of crimes against humanity, currently holds in India.
Speaking to reporters in front of the Supreme Court annex building on Monday, he said the Bangladesh government has already applied to the Indian government for her extradition.
“Bringing Sheikh Hasina back is a legal process, and necessary steps have been taken through that process,” he added.
Asked about a recent Indian Express report suggesting court approval might be required to bring back Hasina, Aminul said it would not be appropriate to comment based on why or how a newspaper wrote something.
The report did not explain the matter in detail, only mentioning the need for court permission, he added.
“We still do not clearly know under what status Sheikh Hasina is staying there,” the chief prosecutor said.
He added that it is not yet clear whether Hasina is in India under political asylum or some other form of authorisation. Therefore, commenting on what the Indian Express meant by court approval would not be appropriate.
