Speculation is rife that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Baharul Alam, has resigned.

News that he resigned on Sunday afternoon spread through the Ministry of Home Affairs and Police Headquarters. However, no official confirmed this, with sources claiming they merely “heard it”.

TIMES of Bangladesh made several attempts to confirm the matter by reaching out to police officials. However, they declined to comment on the matter.

Incidentally, last January, the IGP had turned in his official passport and applied for a regular passport.

According to sources, the IGP was in the office from Sunday morning until noon. Afterwards, he went to the Ministry of Home Affairs for a meeting on security preparations for International Mother Language Day slated for 21 February.

It was after the meeting that news of his resignation spread.

Senior officials from the home ministry and officials of the IGP’s office have also said they have of news of the IGP’s resignation.

Attempts to contact the IGP on his mobile phone regarding this matter were unsuccessful.
