More than 1.6 million pilgrims converged Tuesday on the Plain of Arafat for the most sacred stage of the Hajj pilgrimage, in scenes of devotion and prayer reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
From dawn on the ninth day of Dhul‑Hijjah, worshippers streamed into Arafat to spend the day in Qur’an recitation, remembrance of God and supplication, remaining within the designated boundaries until sunset.
Standing at Arafat — Wuquf Arafah — is regarded as the heart of Hajj. Prophet Muhammad said: “Hajj is Arafah,” underscoring its centrality. Scholars describe the day as one of mercy, forgiveness and renewal, coinciding with the Prophet’s Farewell Pilgrimage in 632 A.D., when he delivered his final sermon at Mount Arafat.
At noon, the Arafah sermon was delivered, followed by combined and shortened Dhuhr and Asr prayers in line with the Sunnah. Throughout the day, pilgrims raised their hands in prayer, recited the Talbiyah and Takbeer, and sought forgiveness in an atmosphere of humility.
Arafat lies about 20 kilometers southeast of Makkah, dominated by Jabal Al‑Rahmah, the Mount of Mercy, where many gathered for contemplation. Tradition links the site to the reunion of Adam and Eve, giving it deep symbolic meaning.
The movement to Arafat followed the Day of Tarwiyah in Mina, where pilgrims spent Monday in preparation. Saudi authorities deployed extensive operational plans, including crowd‑control, medical services, transport and emergency units.
Health officials remained on alert as temperatures exceeded 45°C, urging pilgrims to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun.
At sunset, pilgrims departed for Muzdalifah to perform Maghrib and Isha prayers combined and shortened, before spending the night in worship and rest ahead of the stoning ritual.
