Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the residence of a garments businessman in Uttara area of the capital on Tuesday evening.
The incident took place around 5:50pm at a house on Road 21 in Sector 7 of Uttara. Two men, wearing helmet, arrived on a motorcycle and fired two rounds before fleeing the scene.
Police suspect the attack may have been linked to an extortion demand, as the attackers allegedly failed to obtain the money they had demanded.
However, the businessman, Abul Kashem, declined to comment on the matter.
The four-storey house targeted in the attack is named Jannat Bhaban. Abul Kashem owns the building. He is a garments businessman and the managing director of AKSB Group.
A relative of the businessman said “Two men fired two rounds and quickly fled the area.”
Police later recovered two fresh bullets from in front of the house.
CCTV footage from the building shows two helmeted men arriving on a motorcycle and conducting reconnaissance of the house. They left after noticing people moving along the street. The suspects later returned when the road became quieter. They then fired the shots and escaped through a nearby alley.
Inspector (Investigation) of Uttara West Police Station, Mohammad Muniruzzaman confirmed the incident and said no casualties were reported.
After the shooting, members of RAB, police, the Detective Branch and other intelligence agencies visited the scene. They collected CCTV footage and other evidence as part of the investigation.
