Real Madrid maintained their 100 per cent start to the 2025/26 La Liga season with a 2-1 comeback victory over Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabéu on 30 August, keeping Xabi Alonso’s side top of the table going into the international break.
The evening began with frustration for the home side when Kylian Mbappé had an early goal ruled out after a lengthy VAR check for offside. Moments later, the Bernabéu was silenced as Vedat Muriqi rose highest to head Mallorca into a shock lead against the run of play.
Madrid responded just before half-time with two goals in the space of a minute. First, Arda Güler reacted quickest to Dean Huijsen’s knock-down from a corner to nod home his first league goal for the club. Then Vinícius Júnior produced a moment of magic, slaloming past defenders before finishing coolly into the far corner to complete the turnaround.
The hosts continued to press after the restart and thought they had extended their lead when Güler smashed in from close range, only for VAR to rule the ball had struck his arm in the build-up. Mbappé also had another strike chalked off for a marginal offside, but Madrid held firm despite Mallorca’s late substitutions and pressure.
Xabi Alonso rotated heavily in the final stages, giving minutes to Rodrygo, Brahim Díaz and Dani Carvajal, but his side saw the game out to seal a third consecutive victory under their new head coach.
The win keeps Los Blancos top of La Liga after three matches, with champions Barcelona facing Rayo Vallecano on 31 August in an effort to keep pace. Madrid will return to action after the international break with a tricky trip to Real Sociedad on 13 September.
