Information and broadcasting minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said that the government is working to ensure freedom of the media.
He made the remarks on Thursday morning while speaking at a workshop held at Hotel InterContinental in the capital Dhaka. The event was organised to prepare a framework for the proposed National Media Commission.
The minister said the government is moving ahead with reform activities involving all stakeholders to build a democratic state system. He added that, for the first time, all parties related to the media sector have been brought onto a single platform.
Swapon said this initiative will have a long-term positive impact. The government will act as a coordinator in this process. He also said the effort will help shape a future roadmap for reforms.
State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury said no one is above mistakes. He said responsible and constructive journalism should highlight government shortcomings so that corrections can be made.
