The government has decided to reopen six jute mills under private initiative within the next six months, said Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir on Thursday.
He disclosed the decision at a press conference held at the ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat in the morning.
Earlier in the day, an emergency meeting was held at the ministry with stakeholders on closed jute mills, factory reopening and leasing issues.
State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam and BIDA Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, among others, attended the meeting.
At the press briefing, the minister said the government has also decided to reopen or lease the remaining closed jute mills in phases.
He added that reopening jute mills will boost investment and exports and create new employment opportunities.
