Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that all necessary support is being provided for the burn victims of the fire that erupted at a chemical warehouse in Tongi, Gazipur.
On Tuesday, the home adviser visited the patients who had been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
During his visit, the home adviser said, “All necessary support for the burn victims is being provided by the government. There will be no negligence in their treatment.”
In response to a question about the removal of chemical godowns, the adviser stated, “After the chemical accident in Old Dhaka, those godowns were relocated towards Munshiganj. The Tongi incident is an unfortunate accident. An accident is still an accident. We will make every effort from our side.”
Burn Institute Director, Dr Nasir Uddin, said, “Currently, three members of the Fire Service are admitted to the Burn Institute. Since more than 40% of their bodies are burned, all are in critical condition. They have been placed in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).”
He added, “If burn patients are taken abroad, they might improve, but they could also worsen. Therefore, we will make a coordinated decision on this matter.”
Another individual injured in the Tongi fire, shopkeeper Al Amin Hossain Babu, has been admitted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. 95% of his body has been burned. Doctors have reported that Al Amin’s condition is also critical.
Earlier on Monday, a fire broke out at a tin-shed chemical godown next to Tongi Sahara Super Market, injuring four firefighters and a shopkeeper.
