Heavy rainfall, mountain runoff, and landslides have left 59 people dead and caused widespread damage across seven districts in Bangladesh. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has confirmed that it is actively distributing cash, rice, and essential relief materials to those affected.
According to a fact sheet released by the ministry on Saturday, the floods have hit the districts of Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj. The disaster has submerged 56 upazilas, impacting 374 unions and four municipalities.
In addition to the fatalities, 40 individuals have been reported injured.
To provide refuge for displaced residents, 73 shelters have been opened, currently housing 298 people.
The ministry stated that since 7 July, a total of Tk5.15 crore in cash and 9,050 metric tonnes of rice have been allocated to tackle various disasters, including the ongoing floods.
Moreover, 4,200 bundles of corrugated iron sheets and Tk1.26 crore have been released as assistance for house construction.
Of these allocations, Tk2.3 crore and 3,350 metric tonnes of rice have been distributed specifically within the seven flood-affected districts. Meanwhile, Tk28.5 million in financial aid and 5,700 metric tonnes of rice have been provided to the country’s other 57 districts.
