Gono Odhikar Parishad has given the government a 48-hour ultimatum to take action against those responsible for the recent attack on its president, Nurul Haque Nur. The party has threatened to besiege the Chief Adviser’s residence and the Secretariat if no action is taken.
The ultimatum was issued by the party’s General Secretary, Rashed Khan, at a press briefing held on Sunday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he visited Nur, who is currently undergoing treatment. Rashed Khan also called for the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser, accusing him of failing to arrest the attackers.
Faruk Hasan, Senior Vice-President and spokesperson for Gono Odhikar Parishad, told reporters that Nur, who was initially expected to be discharged on Sunday, had experienced new complications. “His fractured nose has complications, his jawbone remains displaced, and there are concerns about his liver. The doctors have advised that he remain hospitalized,” Faruk said.
Rashed Khan also criticized the government for failing to take action on their earlier promise to send Nur abroad for advanced treatment. “We reject the government’s statement. If necessary, the party and Nur’s family will take the necessary steps to send him abroad,” he said.
The attack on Nur took place on August 29 when he was severely beaten by members of the law enforcement agencies in front of his party office in Bijoynagar, Dhaka. Since the attack, he has been receiving medical care at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
In a strong warning, Rashed Khan declared that if action is not taken against the individuals responsible, including certain law enforcement officers involved, within 48 hours, the party would initiate tough measures. “We will besiege Jamuna or the Secretariat, and the Home Affairs Adviser must resign for his direct involvement in the failure to act,” Rashed said.
